What is the dMAT Exam?
The Digital Master Assessment Test (dMAT) is a standardized academic aptitude test for graduate students applying for Master’s degree programmes in Germany.
Developed in cooperation with the Universities of Ulm and Kassel and offered by the Gesellschaft für Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung (g.a.s.t.), the dMAT was originally supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Bonn.
The dMAT evaluates your general cognitive and analytical abilities, as well as your capacity to apply those skills to academic problem-solving — requiring developed transfer and application skills rather than memorized factual knowledge.
Mandatory from 2026
dMAT is Now Part of the APS Process
From 2026 onwards, the dMAT has been introduced as a new, mandatory additional element within the APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) documentation and verification process for Indian graduates wishing to apply for a Master’s degree programme in Germany.
Who Needs to Take the dMAT?
In its introductory phase in 2026, the dMAT requirement applies exclusively to applicants whose undergraduate degree is in one of the following fields:
Engineering
All engineering disciplines — Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Computer, Chemical and more.
Commerce, Accounting, Finance & Economics
Bachelor's degrees in B.Com, Accounting, Finance, Economics and allied fields.
Business & Management
BBA, BMS and other undergraduate business or management programmes.
Important: If your Bachelor’s degree falls within one of these areas and you plan to pursue a graduate programme in Germany from Summer Semester 2027 or thereafter, you are required to take the dMAT with the General Academic Module as part of your APS documentation process.

How is the dMAT Structured?
The dMAT consists of two modules. It emphasizes transfer and application skills over memorized factual knowledge.
Core Module — General Cognitive & Analytical Skills
- Measures the general cognitive and analytical abilities crucial for Master's-level study, across three subtests.
Figure Sequences
Identify patterns in visual sequences and determine the next figure in the series.
Mathematical Equations
Solve mathematical reasoning problems requiring numerical and algebraic aptitude.
Latin Squares
Complete partially filled grids using logical deduction and pattern recognition.
Subject Module — General Academic Module
- Tests your ability to apply cognitive and analytical skills to academic problem-solving in a general academic context.
Chemistry
Application of chemical principles and problem-solving in academic chemistry contexts.
Physics
Physics-based aptitude covering mechanics, thermodynamics, and modern physics applications.
Computer Science
Data structures, algorithms, and computational thinking for Master's-level CS programs.
Electrical Engineering
Circuit analysis, signal processing, and core EE problem-solving skills.
Mechanical Engineering
Engineering mechanics, thermodynamics, and design-oriented problem sets.
Data Science
Statistical reasoning, data modeling, and analytical problem-solving for data-driven programs.
How the dMAT Certificate is Used
The official dMAT certificate is issued by g.a.s.t. It must be enclosed with your APS application documents and will also be referenced on your APS certificate.
